What a read that was. Quite unexpectedly relevant for a PM, and for all of us, was this page-turner by an ex hedge fund manager in post Soviet Russia. His testimony to what happens if a large part of what we consider ‘normal rules’ and given boundaries collapse. This is the ultimate testimony to what happens if democratic rules and established powers become slave to tyranny and enslaved to corporate or political greed.
Not quite sure how to look at it at first, I really came to appreciate the way Browder showcases just how corruption and ill-incentivised governance and policy can not just ruin you business, but – most dramatically – cause the death of people. Living in a Western democracy, it is hard to acknowledge and appreciate all the work that is needed to keep basic rules and liberties up, and functioning. Taking them for granted can be a shortsighted strategy. And even if there are attempts to course correct, is it too far down the line? What if the corrupt, anti-human rules became the new ‘norm’? It’s a humiliating and impressive story, a real, direct, and all too human pledge for each of us to become aware of our accountabilities as members of our societies.
Browder leads his team through and unspeakable ordeal as it concerns his business, showing leadership strength and leadership through vulnerability. When his friend gets imprisoned, he is willing to risk it all to save him.
